Open Settings: Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner of ChatGPT and choose Settings.
Go to General: Select General from the settings sidebar. This is where account-wide conversation options live.
Open Archived Chats: Find the Archived Chats row and click Manage. A list of every archived conversation appears.

Archiving is one of ChatGPT's least discoverable features. There is no archive entry in the sidebar, no folder icon, and nothing indicating that archived conversations still exist. People archive a chat, cannot find it afterwards, and conclude they deleted it.

The last row is worth noting. Archived conversations are still part of your account, so they appear in your data export. Deleted ones do not, because they no longer exist.
Why archived chats do not show in search
ChatGPT's search covers the sidebar list, and archived conversations are not in it. There is currently no way to search across archived chats from within the interface; you have to scroll the archive list and recognise the title.
On an account with a few hundred archived conversations, this is genuinely painful. Exporting is the practical workaround, since converted files can be searched properly with any tool you like.
Restoring
In the Archived Chats list, each row has an unarchive control. Clicking it returns the conversation to your sidebar in its original position by date, with everything intact. Nothing is lost by archiving and restoring.
Bulk operations
ChatGPT offers Archive All Chats in Settings, then General, which clears your sidebar in one action. There is no corresponding Unarchive All, so restoring is one conversation at a time. Use Archive All with that asymmetry in mind.
Keeping a copy outside the account
Archiving tidies your sidebar. It does not protect anything, since archived conversations live in the same account and disappear with it under suspension or closure.
For a copy you control, request your data export from Settings, then Data Controls, then Export Data. The archive includes archived conversations alongside active ones. Load conversations.json into ChatExports to turn it into Word, PDF, Markdown, CSV, or text files, processed locally in your browser.
Once exported, the search problem disappears too. A folder of Markdown files can be searched with proper full-text tools rather than scrolling a list of titles.
