Back up ChatGPT in Canada

A real backup is a set of files you can open in ten years without an account, a login or an internet connection. That is what this produces. This page is the en-CA version, with CAD pricing guidance and notes on PIPEDA.

How it works

In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data controls → Export data and confirm. OpenAI emails you a download link.
Download the ZIP and unzip it. The conversations live in conversations.json, which is unreadable on its own.
Open ChatExports in any browser and drop conversations.json in. Parsing happens in the tab, on your device.
Search or filter to the conversations you want, choose Word, PDF or Markdown, and download.

What this means in Canada

Pricing: roughly C$14 for a single platform and roughly C$34 for all nine, at current rates. Payment is taken once, in US dollars, so your card issuer applies its own conversion.
No subscription, so nothing renews and there is no local billing entity to cancel with.
Your data-protection rights in Canada come from PIPEDA, plus Quebec's Law 25 if you are in Quebec. You can require the provider to hand over a copy of your conversations, and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada is the body that enforces it.
Processing is local: your export file is read inside your browser tab and never crosses a border, which keeps a conversion out of scope for any cross-border transfer question.
Dates in exported documents follow the timestamps in your export file; YYYY-MM-DD is the convention we use in Canadian guidance.

Can I pay in CAD?

Checkout is in US dollars, which works with any Canadian card. roughly C$14 for one platform and roughly C$34 for all nine are approximate conversions at recent rates — your bank's rate on the day is what you will actually be charged.

Does this help with PIPEDA?

It helps with the part that comes after. PIPEDA gives you the right to a copy of your data, and the provider satisfies that with a machine-readable file. ChatExports turns that file into a readable record. We are a converter, not legal advice, and we are not a party to your request.

Does my conversation data leave Canada?

No. Parsing, conversion and file generation all happen inside your browser on your own device. There is no upload step, so nothing is transferred to a server in another jurisdiction.

Is there a Canadian version of the app itself?

The app interface is English only for now. These pages are international English: same product, local currency guidance and local privacy law, no machine translation.
