How to export ChatGPT conversations with images to Word

Request your data export in ChatGPT under Settings, Data Controls, Export Data, then drop the whole ZIP into ChatExports without unzipping it. The converter reads conversations.json and the image files stored beside it, and each Word document places PNG and JPEG images at the message where they appeared.

Short answer

Request your data export in ChatGPT under Settings, Data Controls, Export Data, then drop the whole ZIP into ChatExports without unzipping it. The converter reads conversations.json and the image files stored beside it, and each Word document places PNG and JPEG images at the message where they appeared.

Step by step

  1. Request your export: In ChatGPT open Settings, Data Controls, Export Data and confirm. ChatGPT emails you a download link, usually within minutes, sometimes within a day.
  2. Keep the ZIP whole: Download the ZIP and do not unzip it. The images live in separate files next to the conversations, so the converter needs the whole archive.
  3. Drop the ZIP into the converter: Open the converter and drop the ZIP. Your chat list appears, along with a check showing how many conversations and images were found.
  4. Check the image results: Open a sample chat that had pictures. The export check lists images found and any that are missing from the archive, before you pay.
  5. Download Word documents: Choose Word. Download one chat, or every chat as separate documents in a single ZIP, each with its images in message order.

Most ChatGPT converters copy the text and quietly drop every picture. If you uploaded screenshots, photos of documents or diagrams, or generated images along the way, that leaves gaps exactly where the context mattered.

ChatExports keeps them.

Where the images are in your export

A ChatGPT export ZIP is not one file. Next to conversations.json you will find many files with names like file-AbC123.dat or file-AbC123-photo.png. Those are the pictures from your chats. The conversation data only refers to them by ID, so a tool that reads conversations.json alone cannot show them.

The converter matches each reference to its file, checks it really is a PNG or JPEG by reading its contents, and places it in the message where it belongs.

What ends up in the Word document

| Content | In the Word file |

|---|---|

| Your messages and ChatGPT replies | Yes, labeled and in order |

| Uploaded and generated PNG and JPEG images | Yes, inside the message they belong to |

| Dates and times | Yes |

| Bold, italics, lists, links, tables and code | Yes |

| Emoji and non Latin text | Yes, shown with the fonts installed for Word |

| Images missing from the archive | Shown as a clear placeholder, never dropped silently |

| The exact ChatGPT page layout | No, the document is cleanly formatted, not a screenshot |

One document per conversation

People archiving a long history usually want separate files, not one huge document. Download all conversations at once and you get a ZIP with one Word document per chat, each named after its conversation title.

Privacy

Your export, including every image, is read inside your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded to ChatExports, and images are never stored anywhere. Close the tab and it is gone.

Before you buy

You can load your own export and read one sample conversation for free. The image check runs on your real archive, so you can confirm your pictures were found before paying. Downloads are a one time $10 for ChatGPT, or $25 for all 9 platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Does the ChatGPT export include my images?

Usually yes. Uploaded and generated images are stored as separate files inside the export ZIP, often ending in .dat. Keep the ZIP whole so the converter can find them.

Will the images appear in the right place?

Yes. Each image is placed inside the message that referenced it, in the same order as the conversation.

Which image types are supported?

PNG and JPEG, which covers nearly all ChatGPT uploads and generated images. Anything else is shown as a placeholder so you know it existed.

Can I check my images before paying?

Yes. After you drop your export, the export check shows how many images were found and whether any are missing, and you can preview one sample chat.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything is read in your browser. ChatExports never receives your conversations or images.
