Step by step
Check which account you are actually in: Open your profile menu in ChatGPT and read the email. Signing in with Google creates a separate account from signing in with the same address and a password, which is the single most common cause of a history that looks wiped.
Sign out completely and back in: Sign out, close the tab, then sign in again choosing the exact method you used originally. If you are unsure, try each one: Google, Microsoft, Apple, and email with a password.
Look in archived chats: In Settings, open General, then Archived chats. Archived threads leave the sidebar but are not deleted, and a mis-tap on a swipe gesture archives a chat instantly.
Export from the account that has the chats: Once you can see them, go to Settings, then Data controls, then Export data. OpenAI emails a ZIP of everything on that account.
Convert the archive into files you own: Drop the ZIP into the ChatExports converter and download the conversations as Word, PDF, Markdown or CSV. Those files belong to you, so the next account switch cannot take them.

First, the chats are probably not gone
Before treating this as a recovery job, rule out the ordinary causes:

A work account and a personal account with the same name

A browser extension that hides or reorders the sidebar
A temporary chat, which is never saved at all by design
Deleted conversations are the exception. Once a chat is deleted it is gone, and no tool recovers it. Anything claiming otherwise is guessing.
Why there is no transfer button
Conversations are tied to the account that created them. OpenAI does not offer a merge, an import, or a way to hand a thread to another login, which is why the answer is always export and carry.
What the export contains
The ZIP from Data controls holds every conversation on that account with full message text, original timestamps, and the model used. It is the complete record, not the part of the page that happened to be loaded.
Carrying the history into your new account
You cannot put old threads back in the new sidebar, but you can keep working with them:
Convert the archive into Word, PDF, Markdown or CSV so it is readable and searchable outside ChatGPT
Paste the relevant conversation, or a summary of it, into a fresh chat on the new account when you want to continue the work
Rebuild your custom instructions by hand, since those are settings rather than conversations
Do the export before you cancel or switch
If you are about to close an account, change employer, or move a subscription, export first. Access to the old login is what makes recovery possible, and losing that access is the one situation nobody can fix afterwards.
