How to recover lost ChatGPT history

Missing ChatGPT chats are almost always still on a different login rather than deleted. Sign out fully, sign back in with the exact email and method you first used, including Google or Microsoft, and the sidebar returns. To move them to the account you use now, export your data from the old login and convert the archive into files you keep.

Short answer

Missing ChatGPT chats are almost always still on a different login rather than deleted. Sign out fully, sign back in with the exact email and method you first used, including Google or Microsoft, and the sidebar returns. To move them to the account you use now, export your data from the old login and convert the archive into files you keep.

Step by step

  1. Check which account you are actually in: Open your profile menu in ChatGPT and read the email. Signing in with Google creates a separate account from signing in with the same address and a password, which is the single most common cause of a history that looks wiped.
  2. Sign out completely and back in: Sign out, close the tab, then sign in again choosing the exact method you used originally. If you are unsure, try each one: Google, Microsoft, Apple, and email with a password.
  3. Look in archived chats: In Settings, open General, then Archived chats. Archived threads leave the sidebar but are not deleted, and a mis-tap on a swipe gesture archives a chat instantly.
  4. Export from the account that has the chats: Once you can see them, go to Settings, then Data controls, then Export data. OpenAI emails a ZIP of everything on that account.
  5. Convert the archive into files you own: Drop the ZIP into the ChatExports converter and download the conversations as Word, PDF, Markdown or CSV. Those files belong to you, so the next account switch cannot take them.

There is no way to transfer chats between ChatGPT accounts inside ChatGPT itself, and that is what most people are really asking when they search for it. OpenAI has no account merge and no import. What you can do is get the history out of the old account and keep it in a form the new account cannot lose.

First, the chats are probably not gone

Before treating this as a recovery job, rule out the ordinary causes:

Deleted conversations are the exception. Once a chat is deleted it is gone, and no tool recovers it. Anything claiming otherwise is guessing.

Why there is no transfer button

Conversations are tied to the account that created them. OpenAI does not offer a merge, an import, or a way to hand a thread to another login, which is why the answer is always export and carry.

What the export contains

The ZIP from Data controls holds every conversation on that account with full message text, original timestamps, and the model used. It is the complete record, not the part of the page that happened to be loaded.

Carrying the history into your new account

You cannot put old threads back in the new sidebar, but you can keep working with them:

Do the export before you cancel or switch

If you are about to close an account, change employer, or move a subscription, export first. Access to the old login is what makes recovery possible, and losing that access is the one situation nobody can fix afterwards.

Privacy

The conversion runs inside your browser tab. Your archive is read from disk, the files are built on your device, and nothing is uploaded or stored by us.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer chats between ChatGPT accounts?

Not inside ChatGPT. There is no merge or import. Export the history from the old account and convert it into files you keep, then paste anything you want to continue into a new chat.

My history vanished overnight. Is it deleted?

Usually not. Check the email in your profile menu and the sign-in method, then look in archived chats. A second login on the same address explains most cases.

Can deleted ChatGPT conversations be recovered?

No. Deletion is permanent and no tool can bring them back. Export regularly if your history matters to you.

Does a Plus subscription move with the chats?

No. Billing and conversations both belong to the account they were created on, so a new login starts empty on both.

What if I have lost access to the old account?

Only OpenAI support can help with account access. Without a sign-in there is no export, which is why exporting early is worth the few minutes.
