Hard lock-in is when a platform won't give you your data at all. You can't leave without losing everything.

Soft lock-in is when the platform technically gives you your data, but in a format almost nobody can use. You can leave, you just can't bring anything useful with you.

AI platforms are the textbook case of soft lock-in.

How It Looks in Practice

You export your ChatGPT history. You get a 200MB ZIP file. Inside is \conversations.json\. You open it.

It's unreadable. Thousands of nested objects, encoded timestamps, message tree structures. You'd need to write code (or pay someone) to turn it into anything human-shaped.

So you do one of two things:

  1. You give up and leave the JSON file sitting in a folder, never opened again
  2. You stay on the platform because at least there your data is browsable
