How to save a ChatGPT conversation without logging in

Signed out chats are never added to any history, so they exist only in the open tab. Copy the conversation text or take screenshots before you leave the page, then rebuild it as a document with ChatExports. Once the tab is closed there is no account and no export that can bring it back.

Do it before you close the tab: A signed out conversation is not stored against any account. Closing the tab, or letting the phone kill it in the background, ends it permanently.
Select the whole conversation and copy: Click above the first message, scroll to the bottom, shift click after the last message, then copy. Scroll all the way up first so every message is actually loaded.

Save it as a file: Download it as PDF, Word, Markdown or CSV. That file is now the only copy, so put it somewhere you back up.

People search this for two very different reasons, and the answer is different for each.

Reason one: you are using ChatGPT signed out

Without an account there is no history. The conversation lives in the page you are looking at and nowhere else. There is no export to request later, because there is no account for OpenAI to build an archive from. Whatever you want to keep has to be taken out of the page before you leave it.

That makes copying or screenshotting the only options, and it makes doing it immediately important. Phones are the usual disaster here: a signed out chat in a background Safari tab can be discarded by iOS to free memory, with no warning and no way back.

Reason two: you want the file without handing over account access

This is the more common worry. Plenty of export tools are browser extensions that ask for permission to read your ChatGPT pages, or web tools that want you to sign in with your OpenAI account so they can pull the chats themselves. That is a lot of access to grant for a file.

You do not have to. OpenAI's own export gives you a ZIP over email, and converting that ZIP does not involve your account at all. You drop the file on the page, it is read inside your browser tab, and the documents are built on your device. There is no login to ChatGPT, no permission grant, and no extension with standing access to your chats.

What signed out chats still mean for privacy

Signed out does not mean invisible. OpenAI can still process the content of the conversation for safety and abuse purposes, and on a shared or work device the browser itself may keep the page in its history and cache. If you are on someone else's machine, use a private window and close it when you are finished.

Keep the copy somewhere durable

A file on a borrowed computer's Downloads folder is not saved. Mail it to yourself, or put it in your own storage, before you walk away from the machine.
