How to archive ChatGPT chats

Hover a conversation in the ChatGPT sidebar, open the three dot menu and choose Archive. The chat leaves the sidebar but stays on your account, and you can unarchive it from Settings, then General, then Archived chats. Archiving is tidying, not a backup.

Short answer

Hover a conversation in the ChatGPT sidebar, open the three dot menu and choose Archive. The chat leaves the sidebar but stays on your account, and you can unarchive it from Settings, then General, then Archived chats. Archiving is tidying, not a backup.

Step by step

  1. Archive a single conversation: Hover the chat in the sidebar, click the three dot menu and choose Archive. On mobile, swipe the conversation or long press it to reach the same menu.
  2. Work through the sidebar in one pass: There is no select all, so bulk archiving means repeating the menu action. Start from the oldest chats, where most of the clutter is.
  3. Check the archived list: Settings, then General, then Archived chats shows everything you have archived, and lets you unarchive or delete each entry.
  4. Export before a big clear out: Settings, then Data controls, then Export data. The ZIP includes archived conversations, so a mis-click during a cleanup costs nothing.
  5. Convert the export to keep it searchable: Drop the whole ZIP onto the ChatExports converter. It reads the file in your browser tab and lists every conversation, which restores the search you lose by archiving.

Archiving is the right tool for a cluttered sidebar and the wrong tool for keeping something safe. Both facts matter, and the second one catches people out.

What archiving does

It hides the conversation from the sidebar and nothing else. The chat stays on your account, keeps every message, and can be restored in two clicks. It does not free space, it does not affect what OpenAI stores, and it does not change privacy or training settings in any way.

What archiving does not do

A better routine

Use archiving for tidiness and an export for safety, in that order. Request the export first, from Settings, then Data controls, then Export data. When the ZIP arrives, drop the whole file onto the converter. It is read in your browser tab and every conversation appears in a searchable list with title, date and message count, archived chats included. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored: the conversations exist in that tab only, and closing it clears them.

Now archive freely. The sidebar gets clean, and the record you actually care about is a set of files you hold, in Word, PDF, Markdown or CSV, that search properly and open in ten years.

If you meant to delete rather than archive

Deleting is immediate and permanent, with no trash folder and no support recovery. The difference between the two is worth knowing before a cleanup, because the buttons sit next to each other.

Cost

Reading, searching and previewing your history is free. Saving files is a one time unlock, ten dollars for ChatGPT or twenty five dollars for all nine platforms.

Frequently asked questions

How do I archive a ChatGPT conversation?

Hover the chat in the sidebar, open the three dot menu and choose Archive. It leaves the sidebar and stays on your account.

Can I archive all ChatGPT chats at once?

No, there is no bulk archive. Each conversation has to be archived from its own menu.

Is archiving the same as backing up?

No. An archived chat still lives inside one account and disappears with it. A backup is a file you keep yourself.

Where do archived ChatGPT chats go?

Settings, then General, then Archived chats. Every archived conversation is listed there and can be unarchived or deleted.
