Step by step
Try the print route first, if it is one short chat: Open the conversation, press Ctrl+P or Cmd+P, and pick Save as PDF as the destination. This is instant and free, and it is fine for a single short thread you only need a record of.
Export your data for anything longer: In ChatGPT open Settings, then Data controls, then Export data. OpenAI emails a download link, usually within a few minutes. The link expires, so save the ZIP to your machine.
Drop the whole ZIP into the converter: Open the ChatExports converter and drop the ZIP straight onto the page, with no need to unzip it. Every conversation in the archive is read in the browser tab and listed with its title, date and message count.
Pick the chat and press PDF: Search the list for the conversation you want, then press PDF. The file is built on your own device and saved to your downloads folder. You can also build one PDF per chat for the whole archive in a single pass.
There are two ways to get a ChatGPT conversation into a PDF, and they are good at different things. Knowing which one you need saves a lot of frustration.
The print route, and where it breaks
Printing the page to PDF works, and for one short chat it is the fastest thing you can do. It starts to fall apart quickly though:
Long threads are loaded in pieces as you scroll, so the earliest messages are often not in the page yet and never reach the PDF
Code blocks are cut off at the right edge instead of wrapping
The sidebar, buttons and input box get printed alongside the conversation
Page breaks land in the middle of messages
You have to repeat the whole thing for every chat
If the result looks complete but starts halfway through the discussion, that is the scrolling problem, not a printer setting.
The export route, and why it is better
Your export is the source data rather than the rendered page, so nothing is missing and nothing is truncated. The converter reads that file and lays the conversation out as a document:
Every message in order, labelled by who said it
Original dates and times
Code kept in monospaced blocks that wrap instead of being clipped
Page breaks between messages rather than through them
One file per conversation, named from the chat title
Doing the whole archive at once
If you are keeping a record of a year of work, converting chats one at a time is not realistic. In the converter you can select everything and download one PDF per conversation in a single ZIP, or build one combined PDF that reads as a single document. A few thousand conversations is normal.
Emoji and other alphabets
PDFs are fussy about characters. Conversations that contain emoji, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic or Cyrillic text fail silently in a lot of tools, dropping the characters or replacing them with boxes. The converter falls back to a font that covers them, so what you read in the chat is what appears in the file.
Privacy
Your chat history is personal, and often confidential at work. The conversion happens inside the browser tab: the file is read from disk, the PDF is built on your device, and nothing is uploaded to us or stored anywhere. Close the tab and the conversation is gone from memory.
No export file? Paste the chat instead
If you only want one conversation and you do not want to wait for OpenAI to email the archive, select the chat in ChatGPT, copy it, and use the paste a conversation tool.
