Step by step

  1. Use the sidebar search: Click the magnifying glass at the top of the ChatGPT sidebar and type a word you are sure you used. It works best for recent chats and exact words.
  2. Check archived chats: Settings, General, Archived chats. Archived conversations are hidden from the sidebar and easy to forget about.
  3. Export your full history: Settings, Data Controls, Export Data. The ZIP contains every conversation you have not deleted, going back to your first chat.
  4. Describe it instead of guessing words: Drop the ZIP into ChatExports, tap the mic and say something like "the recipe with the lemon chicken." The closest chats and the matching passage appear.
  5. Save the ones you find: Add them to your export and download them as Word, PDF or Markdown so you never have to hunt again.

Why the sidebar search misses things

ChatGPT's built in search looks for the words you type. If you remember the idea but not the wording, or the chat has a vague title, it often comes up empty. It also cannot search chats you had in other AI tools, and it cannot pull several results into one file.

Searching by memory instead of keywords
