Step by step
Check which account you are in: Open your profile menu in ChatGPT and read the email shown. If you first signed up with Google and later used a password, or the reverse, you now have two separate accounts on one address and only one holds the chat.
Look in Archived chats: Open Settings, then General, then Archived chats. Archiving hides a conversation from the sidebar without deleting it, and an old link to it can still behave oddly.
Test the link while signed in: If a shared link gives the error, ask the person who sent it to confirm the share is still active. Shared links break the moment the author deletes the chat or turns the share off.
Request your export: Settings, then Data controls, then Export data. OpenAI emails a ZIP holding every conversation the account has. Save it, because that file keeps working when links do not.
Convert the ZIP to read it: Drop the whole ZIP onto the ChatExports converter. Every conversation is read in your browser tab and listed with its title and date, including chats you can no longer find in the sidebar.

Two accounts on one email address. By far the most common. Signing in with Google creates one account. Signing in with a password on the same address creates another. Both show your email in the corner, and neither can see the other's chats. Sign out completely and come back the other way.

An expired share. A shared link is a snapshot the author controls. Delete the chat or disable the share and every link to it returns this error, permanently.
An archived chat. Archiving removes a conversation from the sidebar. It still exists, in Settings, then General, then Archived chats.
A deletion. Once a conversation is deleted it is removed from your account and there is no undo and no recovery from support. If you have an export taken before the deletion, the chat is in it.
Why an export is the fix, not a workaround
Every cause above is a problem with the live account: the wrong session, a revoked link, a removed row. An export is a file on your own disk. It does not care which sign in method you used yesterday, it cannot be revoked by anyone else, and it survives account problems entirely.
The catch is that the export is raw JSON, which is unreadable on its own. Dropping the whole ZIP into the converter reads it inside your browser tab and turns it into a searchable list of conversations, and nothing is uploaded at any point. Conversations stay in that tab only.
