Short answer
Archiving removes a conversation from your sidebar while keeping it in your account. It is fully reversible, the conversation stays in your data export, and nothing is deleted. It is purely organisational, unlike deleting, which is permanent.
Archiving is ChatGPT's tidying tool, not its privacy tool or its storage tool. Understanding the distinction avoids two common mistakes: assuming archiving protects something, and assuming it removes something.
What archiving does
It hides the conversation from your sidebar. That is the entire effect.
The conversation remains in your account, intact, with every message. You can restore it at any time from Settings, then General, then Manage next to Archived Chats. It appears in your data export exactly as active conversations do.
What archiving does not do
It does not delete anything. The content is still on OpenAI's servers and still associated with your account.
It does not free up space. There is no published conversation storage limit, so there is nothing to free.
It does not affect training or privacy. Your data controls settings govern whether conversations may be used to improve models. Archiving has no bearing on that; change it under Settings, then Data Controls.
It does not make the conversation searchable. Rather the opposite. Archived conversations are excluded from sidebar search, so archiving actively makes a conversation harder to find.
Archive or delete?
| Goal | Action |
|---|---|
| Tidy the sidebar, might need it later | Archive |
| Finished with it, want it gone | Export first, then delete |
| Contains something sensitive | Delete, and consider your data controls settings |
| Not sure | Archive, since it is reversible |
The default should be archiving, because it costs nothing and is reversible. Delete only when you actually want the content gone, and export beforehand if there is any chance you will want it later. There is no trash in ChatGPT and support cannot recover deleted conversations.
The search trade-off
Because archived conversations are excluded from search, archiving heavily used conversations makes them substantially harder to retrieve. On an account with hundreds of archived chats, finding one means scrolling the archive list and recognising the title.
If you archive a lot, exporting becomes genuinely valuable. Converted files can be searched with real full-text tools, which solves the problem that archiving creates.
Archive All
Settings, then General offers Archive All Chats, which clears the entire sidebar at once. There is no Unarchive All counterpart, so restoring is one conversation at a time. Worth knowing before you use it.
Keeping archived conversations safe
Archived conversations share the fate of your account. Suspension or closure takes them with everything else, and archiving offers no protection.
For a copy you control, request your export from Settings, then Data Controls, then Export Data. Archived conversations are included. Convert conversations.json with ChatExports to produce Word, PDF, Markdown, CSV, or text files, processed locally in your browser so nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Does archiving a ChatGPT chat delete it?
No. It only hides the conversation from your sidebar. The content remains in your account and can be restored at any time.
Can I undo archiving?
Yes. Go to Settings, then General, then Manage next to Archived Chats, and unarchive the conversation to return it to your sidebar.
Are archived chats included in the data export?
Yes. The export contains every conversation in your account, archived or not.
Does archiving stop my chats being used for training?
No. That is controlled separately under Settings, then Data Controls. Archiving has no effect on it.
